Yes. The graphics are free. Even for the commmercial case. See the License section for more information.

Hello Reiner. I always loved your 2D work. Now I am beginning to use 3D graphics with Unity and your meshes are great for prototyping. I would like to make some simple meshes of my own. What 3D maker would you recommend to someone with low budget?

    Thanks.

Well, Blender is a complete 3D package, comes with everything needed except a 2d paint software, and it is free. And it has a huuuuge community. So that one`s your best bet when you are short of money. You should download it anyways since it has some neat tools that you will need even when you use another modeler. Like for normalmap baking. www.blender.org

When you are not so happy with Blender for the modeling part then you could have a look at Hexagon. Also free. Have a look here: www.daz3d.com/products/hexagon/hexagon-what-is-hexagon

In case you are unhappy with Blender and Hexagon and you need something free then Nvil could also be a good bet. A pure modeler like Hexagon. More powerful, but in development. Means you have to live with quirks and changings. Still free, which may change in the future: digitalfossils.com/

Next is something for sculpting. Blender sculpting is great, but Sculptris is still a bit better. Also free. So that`s the way to go when you are short of money. You need sculpting when you want to make characters: www.pixologic.com/sculptris/

And you need of course something for creating your textures. Gimp is free: www.gimp.org/

This should get you started. But beware, making graphics is a very time consuming task 🙂

Hexagon looks pretty good and easy enough. To lower the overhead in graphics design, I normally use existing models as placeholders until the game engine is completed. The problem is finding very specific models, small things that I could make myself with relative ease(like an apple). I’ll give those a try. Thanks 😉
