The Mode Tab Buttons addon installs a buttonbar to switch between the different object modes in Blender.
Recommended Blender Version: 2.78 and higher. The addon also works in lower versions 2.77 and 2.76. But the addon shows an icon update problem here.
Download the script. ( Right click at it, and save target as … )
Do NOT Unzip the script. We install the whole zip file.
Open the Blender User Preferences and switch to the Addons Tab.
Click the Install from File button, and choose the zipfile with the plugin.
Activate the new installed Plugin.
Save User Preferences.
The script installs into the header of the 3D view. The useage is as simple as clicking the buttons then to switch the modes. In case that a mode is not available for a specific object type then you will see a X graphics at this button.

A bug. There was a button missing when you had for example lights selected.
06.10.2016 – Version 1.0
Mode Tab Buttons 1.0 released. Everything is still in Beta. I just finished it. And so there can still be bugs.
One of the things in Blender that always disturbed me was the edit box to change the modes. You easily click wrong in case the mouse is still one item below. And when you click wrong then you have to open the edit box again …
And you have to read the text to know in what mode you are. The button row is more comfortable here. You immediately see in what mode you are. And what more modes are available.
And the addon fixes one more quirk. The edit box dances away when you switch the mode. Because the menu in front of it changes, dependant of the mode.
So here we go with an attempt to use a tab button row now to switch between the modes instead of the edit box.
